About Us

The purpose of the There’s That Smile Foundation is to equip police cars with toy and book bundles so that responding officers may give them to children who are witnesses or victims of domestic violence or any other instance where police are involved. Our hope is that it will bring the officers and children together and will bring the children comfort and a smile during a time of distress.

IMG_1126We are exclusively using the books and stuffed animals from the Kohl’s Cares line of Kohl’s department stores. A major reason for this is that 100% of the net profit from the sales of these items are donated to support children’s initiatives in communities nationwide. Additionally, the Kohl’s Cash earned through the purchase of book and stuffed animal bundles is used to buy towels and linens for S.A.F.E. Place. Because of this, by donating to the There’s That Smile Foundation, you are ultimately benefiting three charities. These items are also easily accessible, located by the checkout lanes in stores as well as via the “Community” tab at And finally, many of these children have never had a new toy or book and we would love to be able to offer that to them.

IMG_1125The current cost per bundle is $15.00 and covers one child. Each bundle includes one stuffed animal and one book wrapped in a blue ribbon to symbolize the Thin Blue Line with a heart tag that says There’s That Smile. These bundles are matching pairs, which allows each child to read the book while holding the character in their arms.

Beth Thayer
President & Founder

I am an Interior Designer for the United States Lumber Company and a proud LEO wife, sister, sister-in-law, and daughter. My husband is a corporal for BCPD and I’m a lucky mama to two beautiful boys. My passion for this foundation and what it means to me runs from deep within me. I created this foundation with the hopes to make children’s and officer’s days better and to make them smile. I’m wanting to make a positive impact in our community with this program and I want to say thank you to each and every one of you who support it.

Danielle Engelhardt
Secretary & Treasurer

I am a graphic designer and owner of a luxury event stationary company. My brother is an officer for BCPD and I have two beautifully rambunctious boys of my own. I’m honored to be a part of this foundation and to have the opportunity to help bring communities together by brightening the days of children and officers, alike.

Stephanie Estree

I am an 18 year police veteran and have been a detective for the past 6 years. I am currently assigned to the Fusion Center and not only handle criminal cases but handle community relations for the department. I have three children of my own and am very passionate about helping those who cannot help themselves.

Jana (Lawson) Wallace

I am the proud mom of two wonderful boys and I’m a board member for the There’s That Smile Foundation. This non-profit is special to me for many reasons. I’ve always felt that children are our future, which is why I have worked in one of our community’s birth centers for over 15 years. I’m hoping with this foundation, we as a community can make a bigger impact on these children’s lives.

Dyan Woolman

I’m a RN at Bronson Battle Creek and work in the post anesthesia care unit. I’m also a LEO wife, as my husband is a detective for BCPD, and a proud mama to a beautiful four year old daughter. I love this foundation because it symbolizes the compassion our officers show for the children in our community and their willingness to make sure a child feels safe and secure.

The There’s That Smile Foundation would also like to issue a special thank you to the Kellogg Union Employees for making us the first recipient of a very generous donation through their BCTGM Local 3G Charitable, Educational, and Solidarity Fund. This fund was established for the purpose of creating a greater opportunity for Local 3G to impact their local community and Local 3G members with charitable donations, community outreach efforts, and hardship benefits for their members in a time of need.

We would love to thank the Battle Creek Community Foundation for their grant last fall with a special thank you to Officer Herbstreith for nominating us!
